Yilin Verse
竿旄旌旗,執幟在郊;雖有寶珠,無路致之。
Poles, pennants, banners, and flags -- standards held at the border. Though one possesses precious pearls, there is no road to deliver them.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder erupts from the earth as banners and standards are planted in the suburban fields, their pennants streaming in the wind. Though one possesses precious pearls, there is no road by which to deliver them. The scene evokes a military encampment or ceremonial gathering — flags mark the boundary, but access is barred. The treasure exists but cannot reach its intended recipient, blocked by circumstance rather than by lack of value. From Enthusiasm to Inner Truth, the verse captures the anguish of sincerity unable to communicate. Inner Truth's image is wind over the lake — trust that penetrates even the hardest barriers. Yet here the barrier holds, and the pearl of genuine worth remains undelivered. Enthusiasm that cannot find a channel for its sincerity is the cruelest form of obstruction.
