Yilin Verse
東鄰少女,為王長婦;柔順利貞,宜夫壽子。
The young woman of the eastern neighbor becomes the king chief wife; gentle, yielding, correct, and steadfast -- good for husband, blessed with sons.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder rests within the lake, and a young woman from the eastern neighborhood becomes the king's chief consort. Gentle and steadfast, correct in her virtue, she brings longevity to her husband and good fortune to her children. The 'eastern neighbor's maiden' echoes the Shijing's imagery of proper courtship — the east is the direction of spring and new beginnings. Her qualities — softness, obedience, constancy — are the classical ideals of wifely virtue. From Following to Opposition, fire above and lake below pull in opposite directions, yet the gentleman 'seeks sameness within difference.' The verse shows that even within Kui's divergence, a woman of genuine virtue holds the household together, her steadfastness bridging what would otherwise fly apart.
