Yilin Verse

心多恨悔,出門見怪;有虵三足,醜聲可惡。嫫母為媒,請求不得。

Heart full of resentment and regret; stepping outside, one meets the uncanny. A three-legged serpent -- its ugly sound is loathsome. With Momu as matchmaker, the suit does not succeed.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind beneath the mountain conjures monsters, and the transformation opens as heaven beneath the wind — the unexpected encounter of Coming to Meet. The heart is full of resentment and remorse; stepping out the door, one encounters a freak — a three-legged serpent whose ugly cry revolts all listeners. Mo Mu is sent as matchmaker, but the suit is refused. Mo Mu, the legendarily ugly consort of the Yellow Emperor, here serves as go-between in an impossible courtship: an ill-omened creature as suitor, a repulsive matchmaker — every element guarantees rejection. From Work on the Decayed to Coming to Meet, the encounter is unwanted. Wind beneath heaven spreads influence everywhere, but when the messenger and the message are both corrupt, even the broadest reach achieves nothing.
