Yilin Verse

長舌亂家,大斧破車;陽陰不得,姬姜衰憂。

The long tongue ruins the household; the great axe shatters the cart. Yang and yin cannot unite -- the Ji and Jiang clans decline in sorrow.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind beneath the mountain breeds poison, and the transformation rises into the discord of heaven moving against water. A long tongue ruins the household; a great axe smashes the carriage. Yin and yang cannot find accord, and the Ji and Jiang clans fall into grief. The 'long tongue' echoes the Shijing's condemnation of slander, while the axe destroying the carriage suggests institutional violence. Ji and Jiang — the two great surname-lineages of Zhou feudalism — represent the entire aristocratic order. From Work on the Decayed to Conflict, unchecked decay escalates into open confrontation. The mountain's corrupted wind becomes heaven and water pulling apart: litigation, accusation, and the severing of alliances that once held the realm together.
