Yilin Verse
宮成室就,進樂相舞;英俊在堂,福祿光明。
The palace is completed, the chambers finished; music advances, dancers whirl. The brilliant and worthy stand in the hall -- fortune and glory shine bright.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind beneath the mountain raises the hall, and the transformation settles as water above the lake — the measured restraint of Limitation. The palace is built, the chambers complete; music plays and dancers perform. The talented and heroic fill the hall; blessings and fortune shine with brilliance. The verse celebrates accomplished construction — both architectural and political. The completed palace, the assembled worthies, the ritual music all signal a functioning state emerging from decay. From Work on the Decayed to Limitation, prosperity requires boundaries. Water above the lake means the lake has limits; the gentleman sets measures and evaluates conduct. Without limitation, even this newly built splendor will overflow into the same excess that caused the original decay.
