Yilin Verse
三十無室,長女獨宿;心勞未得,憂在胸臆。
At thirty and still without a household; the elder daughter sleeps alone. The heart toils without gain -- worry lodges in the breast.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above the lake blazes into fire high in heaven — Great Possession. Yet the scene is one of longing rather than abundance: a woman of thirty still without a household, the eldest daughter sleeping alone. Her heart labors for what she has not attained; worry fills her breast. The irony is deliberate — Great Possession as the destination, yet the verse describes its absence. The unmarried woman embodies potential unfulfilled, resources untapped, brilliance without a stage. From Approach to Great Possession, the transformation suggests that what approaches is not yet grasped. Fire blazes in heaven, but its warmth has not reached the one who needs it most. Great wealth exists in the pattern, though the individual has yet to claim her portion.
