Yilin Verse
牙孽生齒,室堂啟戶;幽人利貞,鼓翼起舞。
Buds sprout teeth from the shoot, hall and chamber open their doors; the recluse finds constancy auspicious -- he beats his wings and rises to dance.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above the lake encounters heaven with wind below — the unexpected meeting of Coming to Meet. Sprouts push through gums as teeth emerge; room and hall open their doors. The recluse finds advantage in steadfastness, spreading wings and beginning to dance. The verse moves from germination to liberation: teeth breaking through flesh, doors thrown open, the hidden one stepping into light and celebration. From Approach to Coming to Meet, the elder's deliberate oversight gives way to an uninvited encounter — wind beneath heaven arrives without warning. The recluse's dance transforms the hexagram's usual warning about unexpected feminine intrusion into something joyful: what meets you unawares may be the very breakthrough you were cultivating in seclusion.
