Yilin Verse

黃帝出遊,駕龍乘馬。東上太山,南遊齊魯;邦國咸喜。

The Yellow Emperor sets forth, riding dragon and driving horse. Eastward he ascends Mount Tai, southward he tours Qi and Lu -- all the states rejoice.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth above the lake pushes upward as wood grows within the earth — Pushing Upward's steady ascent. The Yellow Emperor sets forth on a grand progress, riding dragons and horses, ascending Mount Tai in the east and touring the lands of Qi and Lu in the south. Every domain he visits rejoices. The journey traces China's sacred geography: Mount Tai, holiest of the Five Sacred Mountains, and Qi-Lu, the heartland of Zhou civilization. From Approach to Pushing Upward, the ruler's presence does not descend from above but grows organically like wood through soil. The Yellow Emperor's progress embodies this: not conquest but visitation, each stop generating spontaneous delight. The tree grows because the earth welcomes it.
