Yilin Verse

據斗運樞,高步六虛。權既在手,寰宇可驅。國大無憂,與樂並居。

Grasping the Dipper, turning the pivot; striding high through the six voids. With authority already in hand, the whole world may be commanded. The realm is great and without worry; dwelling together with joy.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wood grows within the earth, and one who commands the Dipper and turns the celestial pivot strides high through the six voids of heaven. With authority firmly in hand, the whole world can be driven forward. The state prospers without worry, and joy fills every dwelling. This verse celebrates sovereign power at its absolute zenith: the ruler who grasps the cosmic mechanism and governs all under heaven with effortless command. Earth over lake, the image of Approach, shows authority descending to engage the world below with compassion. From Pushing Upward to Approach, the gradual ascent achieves the commanding height from which one can oversee all. The wood that grew from soil now moves the very axis of the sky.
