Yilin Verse
羊腸九縈,相推稍前;止須王孫,乃能上天。
A thousand silkworm threads weave into a single square inch. Spinning one thread per day — by year's end, a brocade robe.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above the lake enters doubled wind — the Gentle's patient penetration. The original verse reads: 'A sheep's intestine winds in nine coils; pushing forward little by little. Wait for the prince's arrival, and then one can ascend to heaven.' The narrow, winding mountain path — proverbially called a 'sheep's gut' — allows only the most gradual advance. Progress is measured in inches, not miles. From Approach to the Gentle, the lake's immediate accessibility gives way to wind's subtle, persistent infiltration. Doubled wind penetrates where force cannot enter: the ninefold winding path demands patience rather than strength. The prince who finally arrives represents the patron or opportunity that transforms incremental effort into transcendent breakthrough.
