Yilin Verse
飽食從容,出門上堂;不失其常,家無凶殃。
Well fed and at leisure, one steps out the door and ascends the hall; never losing the constant way -- the household knows no ill fortune.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above the lake meets wind upon water — Dispersion's scattering force. Yet the verse refuses dispersal: well-fed and at ease, one steps from the door onto the hall platform. Nothing departs from the constant way, and the household suffers no misfortune. The calm is deliberate — eating well, moving with measured confidence, maintaining routine. From Approach to Dispersion, the lake's coherent body of water should scatter as wind strikes its surface. But this household resists the scattering force through sheer regularity: the daily rituals of eating, walking, maintaining order hold dispersion at bay. Wind over water creates waves, but a disciplined life absorbs the turbulence without losing its center.
