Yilin Verse
探鷇得螽,所願不喜;道宜小人,君子咎蹇。
Reaching into the nest one finds a grasshopper, not the prize one hoped for; the way favors the petty man -- the noble man meets obstruction and hardship.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind over earth searches a nest expecting fledglings but finds only locusts — a bitter disappointment. What was sought brings no joy, and the Way favors small-minded men while the gentleman stumbles into blame. The verse is one of inverted expectations: reaching into a bird's nest for chicks and pulling out insects is both comic and ominous. The road that should reward virtue instead rewards pettiness. Earth over thunder forms Return, where a single yang line re-enters at the bottom, signaling renewal. From Contemplation to Return, the transformation suggests that when current outcomes disappoint, one must return to fundamentals. The gentleman's path is temporarily blocked, but the turning point has already begun beneath the surface.
