Yilin Verse

黍稷醇醲,敬奉山宗。神嗜飲食,甘雨嘉降;獨蒙福力,時災不至。

Millet and grain, rich and mellow, reverently offered to the mountain ancestor. The spirits savor the food and drink; sweet rain descends in blessing -- alone we receive heaven favor, and seasonal disasters do not come.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind over earth observes a solemn sacrifice yielding divine response. Rich millet and thick ale are offered reverently to the mountain spirits. The deities savor the feast, and sweet rain descends in blessing. The worshipper alone receives heaven's protective power; seasonal calamities do not arrive. The verse enacts the ideal covenant between human devotion and divine reciprocity: proper ritual performed with sincerity earns nature's cooperation. Doubled water forms the Abysmal, representing peril and the flow of sincerity through danger. From Contemplation to the Abysmal, devout observation navigates the abyss: where others face peril, the sincere ritualist passes through safely, shielded by the very waters that threaten the faithless.
