Trigram Changes
Yilin Verse
晝臥里門,悚惕不安;目不得閡,鬼搔我足。
Lying by day at the village gate, startled and ill at ease; the eyes cannot close -- ghosts scratch at my feet.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind over earth, but instead of serene contemplation, a noonday nightmare. Lying at the village gate in daylight, the sleeper is seized by dread: eyes cannot close, and a ghost scratches at the feet. The verse captures sleep paralysis or demonic visitation — consciousness trapped between waking and sleeping while malign forces encroach from below. Lake over mountain forms Influence, which moves through mutual sensation beginning at the toes. From Contemplation to Influence, the connection is visceral: Influence's trigram imagery begins with stimulation at the feet, and here that sensation is perverted into ghostly scratching. What should be joyful mutual response becomes uncanny violation — intimacy twisted into haunting.
