Yilin Verse

暴虐失國,為下所逐;北奔陰月,王居旄頭。

Tyrannical and cruel, he loses the kingdom and is driven out by those below; fleeing north under the dark moon -- the king dwells among the barbarian stars.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind over earth watches a tyrant driven from his throne. Violent and cruel, he loses his state, expelled by those below. He flees north to the dark month, his court reduced to the star Maotou — the constellation associated with military defeat and barbarian regions. The imagery suggests a ruler so brutal that his own people revolt, driving him into the cold, starless north. Doubled mountain forms Keeping Still, which counsels knowing when to stop. From Contemplation to Keeping Still, the transformation is a forced halt: the tyrant who would not stop his excesses is stopped by those he oppressed. The stillness he refused to practice voluntarily is imposed upon him in exile, beneath hostile stars.
