Yilin Verse

鼎易其耳,熱不可舉;大路壅塞,旅人心苦。

The cauldron has changed its handles, too hot to lift; the great road is choked and blocked -- the traveler heart is bitter.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind over earth observes instruments rendered useless. The cauldron has had its ears replaced — handles changed so the vessel is too hot to lift. Meanwhile the main road is choked and blocked, and travelers suffer bitterly. The cauldron's ears (handles) are the point of interface between the sacred vessel and human use; when they malfunction, the ding cannot serve its purpose. The blocked road compounds the paralysis: neither sacred nor mundane channels function. Wind over lake forms Inner Truth, which reaches others through sincerity's hollow center. From Contemplation to Inner Truth, the transformation reveals how impaired channels obstruct genuine communication. The cauldron cannot be grasped; the road cannot be traveled; the trust that Inner Truth requires finds no vessel to carry it.
