Trigram Changes
Yilin Verse
內執柔德,止訟以默。宗邑賴福,禍災不作。
Inwardly holding gentle virtue; stilling disputes with silence. The ancestral domain relies on this blessing; calamity and disaster do not arise.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Inwardly holding to gentle virtue, one halts contention through silence. The ancestral domain enjoys blessing, and calamity does not arise. From Innocence to Influence, the transformation traces how inner softness creates outer resonance. Xian's image of the lake resting upon the mountain captures mutual attraction through stillness — the mountain stands firm while water collects above, each responding to the other without force. The verse's 'gentle virtue held within' directly echoes this receptive dynamic. Lawsuits are stopped not by argument but by refusing to engage. When innocence meets influence, the result is not dramatic victory but quiet harmony — the ancestral community simply does not generate disaster.
