Yilin Verse

魚擾水濁,桀亂我國。駕龍出遊,東之樂邑。天賜我祿,與生為福。

Fish stir, water muddles; Jie throws our kingdom into chaos. Mounting the dragon, departing on a journey; eastward to a land of joy. Heaven grants us bounty; born together with blessing.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fish churning muddies the water — Jie's misrule throws the kingdom into chaos. Mounting a dragon-carriage, one travels east to a land of pleasure. Heaven bestows its emolument, and life itself becomes a blessing. The tyrant Jie of Xia represents the negation of Wuwang — delusion masquerading as authority. From Innocence to Increase, the transformation charts the escape from corrupted innocence into genuine abundance. Yi's image of wind and thunder working together represents the sage who, seeing good, follows it, and having faults, corrects them. The dragon journey east recalls King Tang's flight from Jie's orbit before founding the Shang — departure from disorder is itself the first act of increase.
