Yilin Verse

鳧鷖池水,高陸為海。江河橫流,魚鱉成市。千里無墻,鴛鳳游行。

Ducks and gulls on the pond; high land becomes the sea. Rivers and streams flow crosswise; fish and turtles fill the market. A thousand li without walls; mandarin ducks and phoenixes roam free.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Ducks and cormorants fill the pond, while highlands become ocean. Rivers overflow their banks as fish and turtles swarm the market. For a thousand li there are no walls, and phoenixes roam freely. From Innocence to The Arousing, the transformation channels Wuwang's spontaneous energy into cosmic upheaval. Zhen's doubled thunder shakes the world — the arousing shock that terrifies and renews. The verse paints a world turned upside down: water creatures on dry land, barriers dissolved, even the sacred phoenix wandering without constraint. This is not destruction but the Creative's raw power unleashed through thunder. The absence of walls for a thousand li captures Zhen's essence: when the shock arrives, all boundaries dissolve, and what emerges is uncontainable vitality.
