Yilin Verse
黃帝出遊,駕龍騎馬。東至太山,南過齊魯。王良御左,文武何咎?不利市賈。
The Yellow Emperor sets forth on a tour, riding dragons and mounting horses. Eastward he reaches Mount Tai; southward he passes Qi and Lu. Wang Liang drives on the left; with civil and martial virtue, what fault could there be? Not favorable for trade.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven stored within the mountain rises as fire blazing in heaven — Great Possession. The Yellow Emperor sets forth on a grand tour, riding dragons and driving horses, traveling east to Mount Tai, south through Qi and Lu. Wang Liang, the legendary charioteer, holds the reins on the left, while civil and martial virtues attend without harm. Yet the verse closes: 'Not favorable for trade.' The Yellow Emperor's celestial procession evokes supreme cosmic authority — the primordial ancestor touring his domain. Wang Liang's supreme horsemanship ensures safe passage. From Great Taming to Great Possession, the mountain's stored heaven blazes forth in full glory. Yet even at the zenith of cosmic power, mere commerce holds no place — this is a journey of dominion, not profit.
