Yilin Verse
火山不然,釣鯉失綸。魚不可得,利去我北。三人同福,以興周國。君子安息。
The volcano does not burn; the angler's line is lost. The fish cannot be caught; profit departs to the north. Three men share in blessing, raising the state of Zhou. The noble man rests at ease.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven stored within the mountain erupts as thunder and fire — Abundance. The volcano does not burn; the fishing line breaks and the carp is lost. The fish cannot be caught; profit departs to the north. Then the verse pivots: three men share one fortune and together raise the Zhou kingdom. The gentleman rests in peace. The 'three men' who established Zhou are traditionally the Duke of Zhou, the Grand Duke (Taigong), and the Duke of Shao — the three pillars who supported the young King Cheng. Though the verse opens with failed individual efforts (broken lines, lost fish), it resolves through collective strength. From Great Taming to Abundance, the mountain's stored heaven becomes lightning and thunder together — but abundance comes not from solitary striving but from shared purpose among the worthy.
