Yilin Verse

童女無媒,不宜動搖。安其居廬,傅母何憂?

A young maiden without a matchmaker; she should not stir or move. Let her stay at ease in her dwelling; what worry has the guardian mother?

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven stored within the mountain becomes fire above the mountain — the Wanderer. A young maiden without a matchmaker should not be moved or disturbed. Let her stay secure in her own dwelling — what has her governess to worry about? The verse is a plea for propriety: a girl of marriageable age needs the proper intermediary before she can leave home. Without one, she should remain in place. The governess (傅母), charged with guarding the young woman's virtue, has nothing to fear so long as order is maintained. From Great Taming to the Wanderer, the mountain's stored heaven becomes fire passing over the mountain — the traveler who stays nowhere for long. The verse advises against premature wandering: some things must be stored and protected until the proper time for departure arrives.
