Yilin Verse
符左契右,相與虐亂。乾坤利貞,幸生六子。長大成就,颯然如母。不利為咎。
Tally left, contract right; together they bring tumult and disorder. Yet Qian and Kun stand firm in constancy; fortunately bearing six children. Grown tall and accomplished, vigorous as their mother. Not favorable for blame.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven stored within the mountain gives way to fire above water — Before Completion. The left tally and right contract are matched, yet the partners turn to mutual cruelty and disorder. Then the verse pivots to cosmic creation: Qian and Kun, steadfast in their constancy, are fortunate to beget six children. The children grow to maturity, vibrant as their mother. Yet 'not favorable for blame' closes the verse with a cautionary note. The 'six children' alludes to the Shuogua's cosmology: Heaven (Qian) and Earth (Kun) generate the six trigrams — Zhen, Kan, Gen, Xun, Li, and Dui. From Great Taming to Before Completion, the mountain's stored heaven faces fire and water still unseated. Creation is underway but not yet finished. The tallies match but trust has fractured; the children are born but the work of ordering them remains.
