Yilin Verse
配合相迎,利心四鄉。昏以為期,明星熠熠。欣喜君奭,所言得當。
Well-matched partners meet and welcome one another; hearts delighted in all four directions. Dusk is set as the appointed hour; bright stars shimmer and gleam. Joyful is Lord Shi; his words are fitting and proper.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven stored within the mountain softens into wind moving across heaven — Small Taming. Partners meet and welcome one another, hearts content in all four directions. Dusk is set as the appointed hour, and bright stars gleam. The verse names Jun Shi, likely a reference to the Duke of Shao (召公奭), a trusted minister of King Wu, evoking the joy of wise counsel well received. From Great Taming to Small Taming, the grand accumulation of heaven within the mountain gives way to the gentle restraining power of wind across heaven. What was held in massive reserve now operates through subtle influence — matched partners, timely words, and the quiet radiance of stars that guide without commanding.
