Yilin Verse

辰次降婁,王駕巡時;廣佑施惠,安國無憂。

The stars descend to Jianglou; the king drives on his seasonal tour. Spreading broad protection and bestowing grace; the state is at peace, without worry.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind above heaven turns to heaven stored within the mountain. The celestial stations align at Jianglou — the lodge corresponding to spring's beginning in the Chinese astronomical system. The king sets out on his seasonal tour, dispensing generosity and broad beneficence. The state rests secure, free from worry. From Small Taming to Great Taming, the gentle accumulation of the wind intensifies into the mountain's vast reservoir of heaven's power. Da Xu's image is heaven contained within the mountain, and the king's tour embodies its counsel: to study the words and deeds of the past in order to accumulate virtue. The celestial alignment signals the proper time; the king's tour channels stored power into administered grace.
