Commentary
Mountain over thunder transforms into earth over lake — the great Approach of authority. A great axe splits the wood; slanderers destroy the state. The 'Two Fives' at the Eastern Gate — Lady Li's agents Liang Wu and Dongguan Wu — conspired to slander Crown Prince Shensheng and the princes Chong Er and Yiwu. According to the Zuo Zhuan, Lady Li bribed these officials to persuade Duke Xian to exile his sons to frontier posts, then framed Shensheng with poisoned sacrificial meat. The prince hanged himself; his brothers fled. Duke Huai of Jin later lost the throne and was killed. From Nourishment to Approach, the transformation is ominous: authority approaching from below can nourish or destroy, and when slander poisons the source, even royal sons are split like kindling.
