Yilin Verse
載車乘馬,南逢君子。與我嘉喜,雖憂無咎。
Loading the cart, mounting the horse; heading south, he meets a noble man. He shares with me glad tidings; though there was worry, there is no blame.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Mountain over thunder gives way to wind from fire — the Family, where inner warmth radiates outward as gentle influence. Loading the carriage and mounting the horse, one encounters a gentleman heading south. He brings joy and good news; though worries remain, there is no blame. The southward journey meets good company, and the meeting itself becomes nourishment — shared delight dispelling anxiety. From Nourishment to the Family, the transformation domesticates the wanderer: wind issuing from fire means that warmth within the household reaches outward. The chance encounter on the road draws the traveler back toward the family's hearth, where worry dissolves into communal joy.
