Yilin Verse

憂不為患,福在堂門。使吾偃安。

Worry does not become disaster; fortune stands at the hall’s door. It grants me ease and rest.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Lake over wind opens into fire above lake — Opposition, where things diverge yet remain connected. Worry does not become disaster; fortune stands at the hall's door, granting peaceful repose. The verse is brief and reassuring: anticipated trouble dissolves, and blessings arrive at the threshold. Opposition's image — fire rising while the lake sinks — suggests forces moving apart, yet here the separation works in the querent's favor, as danger departs and fortune approaches. From Great Exceeding to Opposition, the overburdened beam splits into two diverging elements. But divergence here means that calamity and the self separate — what was crushing weight lifts because it moves in a different direction, leaving comfort and safety behind at the door.
