Yilin Verse

東鄰嫁女,為王妃后。莊公築館,以尊王母。歸于京師,季姜悅喜。

The eastern neighbor’s daughter marries, becoming royal consort and queen. Duke Zhuang builds a hall to honor the queen mother. She returns to the capital; Lady Ji Jiang is pleased.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Clouds and thunder give way to wind moving across earth: initial upheaval resolves into contemplative observation. The eastern neighbor's daughter is married off to become royal consort. Duke Zhuang builds a guest pavilion to honor the king's mother. She returns to the capital, and Lady Ji Jiang rejoices. This references the practice recorded in the Zuo Zhuan where Duke Zhuang of Lu built a pavilion outside the capital to receive a royal bride. The elaborate protocol of interstate marriage reflects how political order was maintained through ritual propriety. From Difficulty at the Beginning to Contemplation, the transformation turns outward chaos into the sovereign's inspection tour: wind over earth observes all beneath it, and proper ceremony reestablishes the bonds that disorder had frayed.
