Yilin Verse
執轡四驪,王以為師。陰陽之明,載受東齊。
Grasping the reins of four black steeds; the king takes him as master. With the clarity of yin and yang, he receives the mandate and goes east to Qi.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Doubled fire gives way to pure heaven: brilliance meets self-generating power. A charioteer grasps the reins of four black steeds, and the king takes him as his commander. The image evokes the appointment of Taigong (Jiang Ziya), who drove King Wen's chariot before being elevated to chief minister and military strategist. 'Mastering yin and yang's light' suggests one who reads the cosmic pattern clearly, and 'receiving the eastern fief of Qi' recalls Taigong's enfeoffment after the Zhou conquest. From The Clinging to The Creative, fire's dependent clarity transforms into heaven's autonomous strength. The charioteer who proves himself in service earns sovereign command, brilliance refined into self-sustaining initiative.
