Yilin Verse

南有嘉魚,駕黃取遊,魴鱮詡詡,利來無憂。

In the south there are fine fish; driving the yellow boat, roaming at will. Bream and carp swim splendidly; profit comes without worry.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Doubled fire meets wind above the lake: brilliance discovers inner truth through natural abundance. In the south, fine fish abound. One harnesses yellow steeds and sets out for a pleasant excursion. Bream and silver carp swim merrily; profit arrives without worry. The verse echoes the Shijing ode 'Nan You Jia Yu' (There are Fine Fish in the South), which celebrates the bounty of a well-governed realm. Fish in classical imagery represent hidden talent and quiet prosperity that surfaces when conditions are right. From The Clinging to Inner Truth, fire's outer clarity meets the wind that stirs the lake into honest responsiveness. The fish come freely because the water is trustworthy. Inner truth, like a well-stocked lake, need not be forced — it attracts abundance naturally through the sincerity of its depths.
