Commentary
A lake upon a mountain, and the verse unfolds in contrasting panels. First, the fall of a Zhou city and the tribute of the distant Yuechang people — the Yuechang, a people from the far south (modern Vietnam region), who according to tradition sent white pheasants to the court of King Cheng of Zhou, acknowledging Zhou's virtue. Then a dark pivot: illness multiplied by demonic affliction, spirits wailing over a lord, a bird's fledgling harboring wild ambitions, and a guest whose loyalties lie elsewhere. From Influence to Progress, the mountain's receptive feeling becomes fire emerging above the earth — daylight advancing. The dual structure mirrors Progress's complexity: virtue's radiance reaches even the remotest peoples, yet within the court itself, sickness and disloyalty fester beneath the surface of advancing light.
