Yilin Verse

亂君之門,佐鬭傷跟,營私貪祿,身為悔殘,東下泰山,見我所歡。

At the disordered lord's gate; joining the fray, heels are wounded. Scheming for private gain and salary; the body is left in regret and ruin. Descending east from Mount Tai; there I see my beloved.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

A lake upon a mountain, and the scene at the gate of a disordered ruler unfolds. Those who abet the lord's quarrels are wounded in the heel; those who pursue private gain and covet stipends find their bodies ruined by remorse. Then an unexpected turn: descending eastward from Mount Tai, one meets the beloved. The verse divides into two halves — the political and the personal. Court intrigue destroys those who participate; only by departing the corrupt center and descending the sacred mountain does one find genuine human connection. From Influence to Abundance, the mountain's openness becomes thunder and lightning together — overwhelming fullness. Abundance warns that the sun at zenith must decline. The verse enacts this: leaving the peak of power for the eastern slope, one trades false abundance for true reunion.
