Yilin Verse
腐臭所在,青繩集聚,變白為黑,敗亂邦國。君為臣逐,失其寵祿。
Where rot and stench reside, blue flies gather in swarms. Turning white to black, ruining the state. The sovereign is driven out by his ministers, losing favor and rank.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder and fire converge in Abundance, and the verse reeks of political rot. Where corruption gathers, green flies swarm — turning white to black, ruining the state. The sovereign is driven out by his own ministers, losing his honored position. The 'green flies' (青繩/青蠅) echo the Shijing ode Qingying, which warns against slanderers who invert truth: 'O green flies, do not settle on the fence; slanderers have no limit.' The transformation from white to black is calumny's signature work. From Abundance to Influence, the lake atop the mountain invites receptivity: yet the verse shows Influence corrupted — when those in power are open to the wrong influences, flattery and slander fill the vacuum. The mountain's emptiness, meant for sincerity, admits poison instead.
