Yilin Verse

魴生淮郤,一轉為百,周流四海,無有患惡。

Bream are born in the waters of the Huai; one becomes a hundred. Circling through the four seas; without misfortune or harm.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

A lake upon a mountain, and from a single source, abundance multiplies. Bream fish born in the bend of the Huai River multiply a hundredfold from one generation, circulating through all four seas without encountering harm or ill fortune. The Huai River was one of the Four Great Rivers of classical geography, and its bream (魴) was prized. The verse celebrates exponential natural increase: from a single origin, wealth and vitality spread everywhere with no obstacle. From Influence to the Gentle, the mountain's receptive openness becomes doubled wind — the persistent, penetrating influence that enters everywhere gradually. What begins as a small stirring of mutual feeling multiplies through the Gentle's pervasive quality until it reaches every corner of the world, spreading benefit like fish multiplying through connected waterways.
