Yilin Verse
文君之德,仁義致福,年無胎夭,國富民實,君子在室,曾累益恩。
The cultured lord's virtue; benevolence and righteousness bring blessings. No year of infant death; the state is rich, the people full. The gentleman resides at home; layered blessings, ever-growing grace.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
A lake upon a mountain, and the ruler's virtue radiates as comprehensive blessing. The 'cultured lord' (文君) governs through moral example, and benevolence and righteousness bring fortune in their wake. Year after year, no infant dies prematurely, the nation grows wealthy, the people prosper, and the gentleman sits securely in his chambers while accumulated favors multiply as enduring grace. Every line adds another dimension of flourishing: moral virtue produces material abundance, which in turn sustains demographic growth and political stability. From Influence to After Completion, the mountain's receptive openness becomes water above fire — everything in its proper place, each element fulfilling its function. The verse describes what After Completion looks like at its zenith: total harmony achieved, all positions filled, all needs met, fortune compounding upon itself.
