Yilin Verse
安上宜官,一日九遷,升擢超等,牧養常山。
Secure above, suited for office; nine promotions in a single day. Elevated and advanced beyond rank; sent to govern Changshan.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven above the mountain opens into wind moving over earth — Contemplation, where the ruler surveys his domain from on high. The verse celebrates swift promotion: secure in one's position, well suited for office, promoted nine times in a single day, elevated beyond one's peers, appointed to govern Changshan. The image is of meteoric ascent through bureaucratic ranks — the very opposite of retreat. From Retreat to Contemplation, the mountain's withdrawal transforms into the wind's broad survey. The one who retreated from the world is now placed above it, observing all with the elevated perspective that only withdrawal could have provided. The verse suggests that genuine retreat cultivates the comprehensive vision required for high office — the contemplative eye that sees the whole landscape.
