Yilin Verse
有莘季女,為王妃后,貴夫壽子,母字四海。
The young woman of Youxin becomes royal consort and queen. Noble husband, long-lived sons; mother to all within the four seas.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder above heaven heralds a union of cosmic proportions. The maiden of Youshen becomes queen — this is the woman of the You Shen clan who married King Tang of Shang, bringing with her the brilliant cook Yi Yin, who would become the dynasty's founding minister. A noble husband, long-lived sons, and the title 'Mother of the Four Seas' mark her as the ideal consort whose influence radiates outward to encompass the realm. From Great Power to Following, lake rests within thunder in Sui: joyful responsiveness within dynamic movement. The verse captures Following's essential mechanism — greatness attracts loyalty not through domination but through the magnetic pull of virtue, and the Youshen maiden's marriage set in motion the entire Shang enterprise.
