Yilin Verse
乘桴渡海,免脫厄中,雖困无咎。
Riding a raft across the sea; delivered from the midst of peril. Though beset, no blame.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire rises above the earth, and a figure rides a raft across the sea, escaping mortal danger. Though beset by hardship, no blame attaches. The image of 'riding a raft across the sea' carries deep resonance in Chinese thought: Confucius once mused that if the Way could not prevail, he might 'ride a raft upon the sea.' It represents the ultimate withdrawal — abandoning the failed mainland for the unknown deep. From Progress to Coming to Meet, the transformation reveals what waits on the other shore. Wind moves beneath heaven, and the sovereign issues commands to the four directions. The fugitive who escapes by raft does not merely survive — he arrives at a new dispensation. What appears as flight from danger is actually the first step toward an unexpected encounter with renewed authority.
