Yilin Verse
販鼠賣卜,利少无謀,難以得家。
Peddling rats, selling divinations; profit is meager, plans come to nothing. Hard to make a home by such means.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind beneath heaven blows through a petty merchant's stall. Selling rats and peddling fortunes, the profit is meager and the plan nonexistent — hardly enough to establish a household. The verse paints a picture of marginal survival: the rat-seller and fortune-teller operate at the lowest rung of commerce, their trades yielding too little to build anything lasting. From Coming to Meet to Progress, fire rises above the earth as the sun emerges at dawn — yet the verse's subject cannot participate in this brightness. The encounter that Gou offers is squandered on trivial schemes. Progress requires vision and substance; petty commerce in dubious goods leads only to stagnation.
