Yilin Verse
登虛望貧,暮食无食。長子南戍,與我生分。
She climbs the empty height and gazes on poverty; at dusk there is no food to eat. The eldest son garrisons the south; from me he is parted in life.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind from fire once filled the household, but now the family is scattered by poverty and conscription. Climbing an empty height, one gazes out at destitution — by evening there is nothing to eat. The eldest son has been sent south to garrison duty, and the separation may be permanent. The verse captures the devastating intersection of famine and military service: the breadwinner is taken, the cupboard is bare, and the family stares across empty distance. From The Family to Following, thunder rests within the lake as evening falls. Following means adapting to what comes, retreating into rest when the day's energy is spent. But this family has nothing left to follow — only absence. The lake's stillness at dusk mirrors a household emptied of its members, waiting for a return that may never come.
