Yilin Verse

東鄰嫁女,為王妃后。莊公築館,以尊王母,歸于京師,季姜悅喜。

Deep in the embroidered chamber, lamplight on the bride's red ornaments. Before the courtyard, a cassia tree; the autumn moon fills the hall.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind from fire illuminates the family's marital bonds. The original verse reads: 'The eastern neighbor's daughter marries and becomes queen consort. Duke Zhuang builds a pavilion to honor the king's mother. She returns to the capital, and Lady Jijiang is delighted.' This describes a diplomatic marriage at the highest level — a woman from an allied state becoming consort and receiving formal recognition through the construction of a ceremonial residence. The verse celebrates marriage as political alliance and family honor achieved through proper ritual. From The Family to Retreat, heaven rises above the mountain in dignified withdrawal. The bride who enters the palace paradoxically embodies retreat's principle: she leaves her natal family behind, and in that graceful departure, her family's prestige is elevated rather than diminished.
