Yilin Verse
安床厚褥,不歸久宿。棄我喜宴,困於南國。投杼之憂,弗成禍災。
The bed made soft with thick quilts, yet he does not return to sleep. He abandons our glad feast, stranded in the southern land. The worry of throwing the shuttle; yet it does not become true disaster.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind from fire binds the family, but here the bonds are tested by separation and suspicion. A comfortable bed with thick quilts stands ready, yet the absent one does not return to sleep in it. The speaker's feast is abandoned; the traveler is stranded in the southern lands. Then comes the 'worry of the thrown shuttle' — an allusion to the story of Zeng Shen's mother: told three times that her son had killed a man, even she finally threw down her loom shuttle and fled in panic. Yet the verse resolves: the slander does not become a real disaster. From The Family to Opposition, fire above the lake pulls in contrary directions. Opposition creates estrangement, but estrangement need not become permanent rupture — if trust survives the test of rumor, the family can be restored.
