Yilin Verse

陰陽辨舒,二姓相合。婚姻孔云,生我利福。

Yin and yang separate and extend; two surnames join together. Marriage is blessed and abundant; it brings me profit and fortune.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire above the lake, estranged elements, yet yin and yang unfold and harmonize. Two surnames join in marriage, and the union is blessed — the classical 'Kong Yun' formula evokes the Shijing's wedding odes, where the coming together of different clans generates prosperity. The verse pivots Opposition's essential tension into a generative force: it is precisely because the two are different that their union is fertile. From Opposition to The Family, wind emerges from fire as warmth within a household radiates outward through consistent speech and steady conduct. The transformation from estrangement to kinship reveals that the deepest family bonds form not despite difference but through it — two natures joined in complementary rhythm, producing blessing.
