Commentary
Wind from fire once sustained the family, but the spring has dried up and the dragon languishes. The Viscount of Ji was enslaved, Prince Bigan lost his life, and the house of Shang was shattered. 'When the spring dries, the dragon grieves' — the dragon depends on water as a dynasty depends on its moral wellspring. The Viscount of Ji, one of the Three Benevolent Ones of Shang, feigned madness and was reduced to slavery. 'Gan Shu' likely refers to Bigan, who remonstrated with King Zhou and was executed, his heart cut out. The family of Yin is destroyed from within. From The Family to Revolution, fire within the lake transforms what can no longer be sustained. Revolution becomes necessary when the ruling house has consumed its own moral foundation — the only remedy is a complete change of mandate.
