Commentary

Wind from fire defines the family's customs, but here two families from alien lands cannot find common ground. Different countries and different customs — their feelings do not connect. Metal and wood are natural enemies; the Rooster attacks the sandalwood valley. The Five Phases theory designates metal as the destroyer of wood, and the Rooster (酉) is the branch associated with metal. The verse uses cosmological incompatibility to explain human estrangement: some unions are structurally doomed because the elemental natures involved are fundamentally opposed. From The Family to Before Completion, fire sits above water but cannot reach it — the final hexagram's permanent incompletion. The family that attempts to unite incompatible elements discovers that some gaps cannot be bridged, and the work remains forever unfinished.
