Yilin Verse
南有嘉魚,駕黃取𩹊。魴鱮詡詡,利來毋憂。
In the south there are fine fish; driving the yellow boat to catch bream. Bream and silver carp leap merrily; profit comes without worry.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire above the lake, estranged forces, yet the waters below teem with abundance. In the south swim fine fish; one harnesses a yellow horse and rides out to catch bream and carp. The fish leap and flash in profusion, and profit arrives without cause for worry. The imagery echoes the Shijing ode 'Nan You Jia Yu,' celebrating generous feasting and natural abundance bestowed by heaven. From Opposition to Peace, heaven and earth exchange positions and mingle freely. The transformation dissolves estrangement into cosmic harmony: what was divided — fire fleeing upward, water sinking below — now circulates as heaven descends and earth rises. Abundance flows naturally when opposites interpenetrate rather than pull apart.
