Yilin Verse

改柯易葉,飯溫不食。豪雄爭強,先者受福。

Changing branch and swapping leaf; the meal grows cold, uneaten. Bold heroes vie for dominance; the first to act receives the blessing.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire above the lake pulls in opposing directions as the old order sheds its skin. Branches change shape, leaves transform; cooked food grows cold and goes uneaten. In such times of upheaval, bold contenders vie for supremacy, and whoever moves first seizes the advantage. The verse captures the energy of revolutionary transition: when the familiar decays, hesitation means starvation. From Opposition to Difficulty at the Beginning, the estranged energies of fire and lake reform as thunder rumbling beneath gathering clouds — the birth-storm of a new world. Clouds and thunder signal that creative potential is coalescing, but only the daring who act before the storm breaks can plant their standard in the nascent terrain.
