Yilin Verse

駕黃買蒼,與利相迎。心獲所守,不累弟兄。

Harnessing the yellow, buying the grey; meeting profit on the way. The heart finds what it guards; not encumbering brothers.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire above the lake, and a merchant harnesses yellow horses to a chariot, setting out to purchase fine stock — perhaps blue-grey horses or simply good merchandise. Profit comes to meet him on the road. The heart finds what it seeks to hold, and no burden falls upon brothers or kin. This is a verse of clean transaction: desire aligns with opportunity, and the gain enriches without entangling. The family is left unencumbered because the venture stands on its own merit. From Opposition to Revolution, fire blazes within the lake, and the gentleman reforms the calendar to clarify the seasons. The transformation from successful commerce to fundamental change suggests that once the right exchange is made, one can restructure the very framework of time and order.
