Yilin Verse
伯虎仲熊,德義淵弘。使布五教,陰陽順序。
Bo Hu and Zhong Xiong, their virtue and righteousness profound and vast. They spread the Five Teachings abroad; yin and yang follow their proper order.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water on the mountain parts before the virtue of ancient sages. Bo Hu and Zhong Xiong — names drawn from the legendary Eight Talented Ones (八元) who served Emperor Shun — spread the Five Teachings of human relations, and yin and yang fall into proper sequence. These culture-heroes brought cosmic order through moral education rather than force: father and son in affection, ruler and subject in righteousness, husband and wife in distinction, elder and younger in precedence, friend and friend in trust. From Obstruction to Great Exceeding, the lake submerges the trees as extraordinary pressure builds. Great Exceeding demands that one stand alone without fear. The verse affirms that when extraordinary individuals apply extraordinary virtue, even the most obstructed cosmic order can be set right — but the effort required is itself 'great exceeding.'
